For the fourth consecutive year, the CIS recorded growth in shipments abroad of bottles, jars and other containers of glass, which increased by 69% to X units in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a resilient expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +85.0% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Russia dominates exports structure, amounting to X units, which was near 85% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Moldova (X units), creating an 8.2% share of total exports. The following exporters - Belarus (X units) and Armenia (X units) - together made up 4.9% of total exports.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bottles, jars and other containers of glass exports, with a CAGR of +13.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Armenia (+7.6%) and Moldova (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Belarus (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+16 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Moldova (-3.6 p.p.) and Belarus (-11.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest glass bottle, jar and container supplier in the CIS, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Moldova ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Armenia, with a 4.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to +2.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Moldova (+6.4% per year) and Armenia (+4.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -29.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per unit), while Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (-0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

In 2021, supplies from abroad of bottles, jars and other containers of glass increased by 5.9% to X units, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of bottles, jars and other containers of glass, namely Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Armenia, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Azerbaijan (X units) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Moldova (X units). All these countries together held near 14% share of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X units) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Armenia (with a CAGR of +20.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Belarus ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 71% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova and Kyrgyzstan, which together accounted for a further 26%.

Armenia, with a CAGR of +9.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Russia ($X per unit) and Moldova ($X per unit), while Armenia ($X per unit) and Kyrgyzstan ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (-0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
