Cabbage Market Size in CIS

The CIS cabbage market declined slightly to $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a deep setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Cabbage Production in CIS

In value terms, cabbage production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of cabbage production was Russia (X tons), accounting for 54% of total volume. Moreover, cabbage production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Uzbekistan (X tons), fourfold. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 12% share.

In Russia, cabbage production shrank by an average annual rate of -2.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (-0.5% per year) and Kazakhstan (+2.4% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of cabbage and other brassicas in the CIS was estimated at X tons per ha, almost unchanged from 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 8%. Over the period under review, the cabbage yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The cabbage harvested area rose modestly to X ha in 2022, increasing by 2.1% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cabbage production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in CIS

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of cabbage and other brassicas, when their volume increased by 44% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 120% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cabbage exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 175% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 66% of total exports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 8.8% share, followed by Russia (7.2%), Belarus (7%) and Kyrgyzstan (5.7%). Armenia (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Uzbekistan increased at an average annual rate of +28.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+64.2%), Kazakhstan (+39.3%), Tajikistan (+33.8%) and Armenia (+23.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +64.2% from 2012-2022. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+66 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+6.9 p.p.) and Russia (+6.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Belarus (-32.1 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (-47.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest cabbage supplier in the CIS, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Uzbekistan totaled +31.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+5.2% per year) and Kazakhstan (+46.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 9.8% against the previous year. Export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cabbage export price increased by +8.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 58%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Cabbage imports soared to X tons in 2022, increasing by 36% against 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cabbage imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan (X tons) and Russia (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together constituting 84% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), mixing up a 4.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Armenia (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Moldova (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) - together made up 11% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Armenia (with a CAGR of +60.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cabbage and other brassicas in the CIS, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at -9.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+5.6% per year) and Belarus (-0.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -12.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
