Market Size for Wood Boxes, Crates and Cable Drums in CIS

In 2022, the CIS market for wood boxes, crates and cable drums was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded prominent growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, wood box and cable drum production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 54%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of wood boxes, crates and cable drums, when their volume decreased by -38.5% to X units. In general, exports, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 105%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, wood box and cable drum exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 147% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Russia represented the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which accounted for 71% of total exports. Belarus (X units) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Moldova (12%).

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +21.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Moldova (+23.6%) and Belarus (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +23.6% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia and Moldova increased by +27 and +6.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest wood box and cable drum supplier in the CIS, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 23% share of total exports.

In Russia, wood box and cable drum exports expanded at an average annual rate of +23.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+10.2% per year) and Moldova (+28.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 4.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wood box and cable drum export price increased by +25.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 47% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per unit), while Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of wood boxes, crates and cable drums were finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 111%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood box and cable drum imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 219%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Belarus (X units) was the key importer of wood boxes, crates and cable drums, making up 41% of total imports. Azerbaijan (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Moldova (X units), Kazakhstan (X units) and Russia (X units). All these countries together held near 57% share of total imports.

Imports into Belarus increased at an average annual rate of +28.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+29.3%), Moldova (+18.8%) and Kazakhstan (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +29.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Russia (-10.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Belarus, Azerbaijan and Moldova increased by +32, +16 and +10 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Moldova ($X), Belarus ($X) and Azerbaijan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 80% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +30.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -38.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 51%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per unit), while Belarus ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
