Exports in CIS
In 2021, exports of calcareous building stone in the CIS skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 23% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 352% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, calcareous building stone exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 653% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Armenia represented the main exporter of calcareous building stone in the CIS, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 71% of total exports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Russia (13%). Kazakhstan (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Armenia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the calcareous building stone exports, with a CAGR of +22.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+20.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Russia (-18.2%) and Kazakhstan (-35.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Armenia (+66 p.p.) and Belarus (+12 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-18.7 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-46.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Armenia ($X) remains the largest calcareous building stone supplier in the CIS, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 5.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Armenia amounted to +19.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (-7.5% per year) and Belarus (+5.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 4.5% against the previous year. Export price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, calcareous building stone export price decreased by -0.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 67% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+13.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS
Calcareous building stone imports surged to X tons in 2021, jumping by 167% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 463% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, calcareous building stone imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 361%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 86% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), mixing up an 8.4% share of total imports. Armenia (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+56.6%) and Kazakhstan (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +56.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Armenia (-8.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia and Belarus increased by +9.1 and +8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported calcareous building stone in the CIS, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 7% share of total imports. It was followed by Armenia, with a 1.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to +9.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+40.3% per year) and Armenia (+7.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -22.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 110%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Armenia (+16.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
