Carbides Market Size in CIS

The CIS carbides market declined slightly to $X in 2022, which is down by -3% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 7.3% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, carbides exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Russia represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), making up a 33% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +0.9%).

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest carbides supplier in the CIS, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan amounted to $X per ton.

In 2022, the amount of carbides imported in the CIS reached X tons, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +12.0% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 22%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, carbides imports dropped to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +18.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Russia was the main importer of carbides in the CIS, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 74% of total imports in 2022. Belarus (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Uzbekistan (6.5%). Kazakhstan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to carbides imports into Russia stood at +10.5%. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+45.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +45.9% from 2012-2022. Uzbekistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belarus (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+25 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+6.5 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+4.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Belarus (-27.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported carbides in the CIS, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled +4.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+20.8% per year) and Belarus (-8.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 12%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
