Russia prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 95% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Azerbaijan (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) - each recorded a 4.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to carbon electrode exports from Russia stood at -3.9%. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+190.0%) and Kazakhstan (+59.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +190.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Azerbaijan (+2.4 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-4.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest carbon electrode supplier in the CIS, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 0.5% share of total exports.

In Russia, carbon electrode exports contracted by an average annual rate of -3.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+45.3% per year) and Azerbaijan (+41.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of carbon electrodes increased by 5.7% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 30%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, carbon electrode imports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed a modest increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 110% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia was the main importer of carbon electrodes in the CIS, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 77% of total imports in 2022. Azerbaijan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by Kazakhstan (10%).

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of carbon electrodes. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+29.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +29.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-14.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia and Azerbaijan increased by +16 and +9.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported carbon electrodes in the CIS, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 17% share of total imports.
