Carbonate Market Size in CIS

After two years of decline, the CIS carbonate market increased by 8.6% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carbonate production rose to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +6.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, carbonate exports amounted to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 23%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Russia dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2021. Uzbekistan (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the carbonates and peroxocarbonates exports, with a CAGR of +3.1% from 2012 to 2021. Uzbekistan (-16.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-3.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest carbonate supplier in the CIS, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 3% share of total exports.

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (-2.3%).

In 2021, supplies from abroad of carbonates and peroxocarbonates increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after five years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, carbonate imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 42% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), Russia (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons), together constituting a 50% share of total imports. Moldova (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +634.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest carbonate importing markets in the CIS were Russia ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Belarus ($X), with a combined 85% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Moldova, which together accounted for a further 13%.

Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +419.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. Import price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, carbonate import price decreased by -13.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
