In 2022, the average yield of carrots and turnips in the CIS reached X tons per ha, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 9.1% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, exports of carrots and turnips in the CIS expanded markedly to X tons, growing by 7.3% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 64% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, carrot and turnip exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 107%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Belarus was the major exporter of carrots and turnips in the CIS, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 54% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons), together comprising a 42% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +89.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest carrot and turnip supplier in the CIS, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 5.8% share.

In Belarus, carrot and turnip exports increased at an average annual rate of +31.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+25.2% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-3.4% per year).

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 9.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, carrot and turnip export price increased by +38.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 48%. Imports in CIS

In 2022, the amount of carrots and turnips imported in the CIS reduced to X tons, waning by -5.2% compared with 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carrot and turnip imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Russia was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 64% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kyrgyzstan (14%). The following importers - Belarus (X tons) and Armenia (X tons) - together made up 4.8% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to carrot and turnip imports into Russia stood at -1.4%. At the same time, Armenia (+150.2%), Kyrgyzstan (+123.5%) and Belarus (+17.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +150.2% from 2012-2022. Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Kyrgyzstan (+14 p.p.), Belarus (+2.1 p.p.) and Armenia (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-14.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported carrots and turnips in the CIS, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 7.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 4.7% share.

In Russia, carrot and turnip imports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+1.9% per year) and Belarus (+18.5% per year).
