Paperboard Case Material Market Size in CIS

The CIS paperboard case material market fell slightly to $X in 2022, dropping by -4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paperboard case material production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of paperboard case materials, when their volume decreased by -3.3% to X tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, paperboard case material exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 77%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

Russia was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 86% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), generating a 12% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to paperboard case material exports from Russia stood at +12.0%. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+18.4%) and Belarus (+7.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +18.4% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia increased by +4.4 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest paperboard case material supplier in the CIS, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled +11.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+9.8% per year) and Kazakhstan (+18.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -10.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

In 2022, paperboard case material imports in the CIS fell slightly to X tons, standing approx. at the previous year's figure. In general, imports continue to indicate a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paperboard case material imports totaled $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +66.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 46%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Russia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) dominates imports structure, together constituting 71% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held a 9.2% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Uzbekistan (5.2%) and Moldova (4.6%). Armenia (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +66.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest paperboard case material importing markets in the CIS were Belarus ($X), Russia ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X), with a combined 85% share of total imports. Uzbekistan, Armenia, Moldova and Azerbaijan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

Among the main importing countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +65.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paperboard case material import price increased by +61.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
