In 2021, the CIS caustic soda market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, saw a slight reduction. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 37%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the caustic soda exports, with a CAGR of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Russia.

In 2021, overseas purchases of caustic soda decreased by -9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, caustic soda imports fell modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 31%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Belarus (X tons) was the major importer of caustic soda, making up 42% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), Russia (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons), together comprising a 53% share of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +2.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, Belarus ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 73% of total imports. Russia, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

Among the main importing countries, Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of -1.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 8.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
