Ceramic Tile Market Size in CIS

The CIS ceramic tile market shrank to $X in 2022, reducing by -6.5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a mild decrease. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ceramic tile production shrank slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of ceramic tiles increased by 18% to X square meters, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, ceramic tile exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +66.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 38%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Russia (X square meters), Belarus (X square meters) and Uzbekistan (X square meters) represented roughly 87% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X square meters), generating an 8.9% share of total exports. Kyrgyzstan (X square meters) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Azerbaijan (with a CAGR of +133.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Belarus ($X) and Azerbaijan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 82% share of total exports.

Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +157.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per square meter in 2022, surging by 9.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per square meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per square meter), while Uzbekistan ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+10.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of ceramic tiles, when their volume decreased by -10.2% to X square meters. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 40%. The volume of import peaked at X square meters in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, ceramic tile imports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 37%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X square meters) was the main importer of ceramic tiles, achieving 41% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X square meters), Azerbaijan (X square meters), Tajikistan (X square meters), Uzbekistan (X square meters), Belarus (X square meters) and Armenia (X square meters), together comprising a 54% share of total imports.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -2.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tajikistan (+28.1%), Azerbaijan (+12.3%), Uzbekistan (+11.8%) and Armenia (+11.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +28.1% from 2012-2022. Kazakhstan and Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Armenia increased by +7.9, +5.8, +5.4 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ceramic tiles in the CIS, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with an 8.5% share.

In Russia, ceramic tile imports decreased by an average annual rate of -4.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (-3.5% per year) and Azerbaijan (+10.5% per year).

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per square meter in 2022, rising by 8.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
