Cheese Market Size in CIS

For the third year in a row, the CIS cheese market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 6.8% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Cheese Production in CIS

In value terms, cheese production expanded sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 19%. The level of production peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports in CIS

For the fourth year in a row, the CIS recorded growth in shipments abroad of cheese, which increased by 8.8% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +113.6% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, cheese exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +85.3% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Belarus (X tons) represented the major exporter of cheese, achieving 86% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), comprising a 10% share of total exports.

Belarus was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cheese exports, with a CAGR of +9.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Russia (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Belarus (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-3.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest cheese supplier in the CIS, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 9.2% share of total exports.

In Belarus, cheese exports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Russia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-0.1%).

Cheese Imports

Imports in CIS

In 2021, overseas purchases of cheese increased by 4.9% to X tons, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cheese imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 84% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), mixing up an 8.5% share of total imports. The following importers - Azerbaijan (X tons), Moldova (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cheese imports into Russia stood at -2.3%. At the same time, Moldova (+9.6%), Belarus (+9.3%), Azerbaijan (+5.2%) and Kazakhstan (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +9.6% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kazakhstan increased by +3.4 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cheese in the CIS, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 7.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with a 2.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled -3.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+2.1% per year) and Azerbaijan (+14.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Moldova ($X per ton) and Belarus ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan ($X per ton) and Kazakhstan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
