Market Size for Cherries and Sour Cherries in CIS
After four years of growth, the CIS cherry and sour cherry market decreased by -9.5% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Production of Cherries and Sour Cherries in CIS
In value terms, cherry and sour cherry production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -10.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 68% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Russia (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons), together comprising 87% of total production. Belarus, Moldova and Armenia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +14.5%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the average yield of cherries and sour cherries in the CIS amounted to X tons per ha, flattening at 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the yield increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the cherry and sour cherry harvested area in the CIS fell slightly to X ha, declining by -3.7% against 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 13%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cherry and sour cherry production reached the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Exports in CIS
In 2022, shipments abroad of cherries and sour cherries decreased by -8.3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 126%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cherry and sour cherry exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 255%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Azerbaijan was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 46% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons) and Moldova (X tons), together generating a 48% share of total exports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Azerbaijan (with a CAGR of +16.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Moldova ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 95% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +15.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -19.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (-0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Cherries and Sour Cherries
Imports in CIS
In 2022, supplies from abroad of cherries and sour cherries decreased by -68.6% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cherry and sour cherry imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 55%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia was the main importer of cherries and sour cherries in the CIS, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 62% of total imports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X tons) took a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (12%). Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cherry and sour cherry imports into Russia stood at -11.4%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+45.0%), Belarus (+17.4%) and Kazakhstan (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +45.0% from 2012-2022. Kazakhstan (+14 p.p.), Belarus (+11 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -26% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cherries and sour cherries in the CIS, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 5.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled +1.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (-1.1% per year) and Belarus (+5.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 178% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a prominent expansion. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+14.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
