Cherry Market Size in CIS

The CIS cherry market contracted markedly to $X in 2022, declining by -18.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a perceptible reduction. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cherry production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 99%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Uzbekistan (X tons) remains the largest cherry producing country in the CIS, comprising approx. 62% of total volume. Moreover, cherry production in Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Russia (X tons), fourfold. Azerbaijan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Uzbekistan amounted to +12.4%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Russia (-3.0% per year) and Azerbaijan (+1.8% per year).

The average cherry yield reached X tons per ha in 2022, surging by 4.8% on the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 22%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of cherries in the CIS reduced to X ha, which is down by -5% compared with the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cherry production attained the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports in CIS

In 2022, cherry exports in the CIS fell to X tons, shrinking by -11.1% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 168%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cherry exports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 238%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Azerbaijan was the major exporter of cherries in the CIS, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 49% of total exports in 2022. Uzbekistan (X tons) took a 28% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Moldova (18%). The following exporters - Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Armenia (X tons) - together made up 4.5% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Moldova (with a CAGR of +16.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cherry supplying countries in the CIS were Azerbaijan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Moldova ($X), with a combined 96% share of total exports. Kyrgyzstan and Armenia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 3.6%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of +22.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -23% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+10.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of cherries decreased by -73.3% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 62%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cherry imports declined to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 55% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X tons) was the key importer of cherries, making up 48% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together committing a 52% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +84.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cherries in the CIS, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 5.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 4.1% share.

In Russia, cherry imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+1.4% per year) and Belarus (+14.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 225% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a buoyant expansion. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
