Chestnut Market Size in CIS

The CIS chestnut market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, picking up by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a remarkable increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Chestnut Production in CIS

In value terms, chestnut production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a slight slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 179% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of chestnut production was Azerbaijan (X tons), comprising approx. 87% of total volume. Moreover, chestnut production in Azerbaijan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Uzbekistan (X tons), more than tenfold. Tajikistan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 3.2% share.

In Azerbaijan, chestnut production contracted by an average annual rate of -3.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+1.5% per year) and Tajikistan (+1.8% per year).

In 2021, the average chestnut yield in the CIS dropped to X tons per ha, which is down by -1.7% compared with the year before. The yield indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, chestnut yield increased by +52.7% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the chestnut yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the harvested area of chestnuts in the CIS totaled X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 1.2%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in CIS

For the third consecutive year, the CIS recorded growth in shipments abroad of chestnuts, which increased by 146% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 278% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chestnut exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 3,357%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Armenia (X tons) represented roughly 98% of total exports in 2021.

Armenia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chestnuts exports, with a CAGR of +20.1% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Armenia ($X) also remains the largest chestnut supplier in the CIS.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Armenia amounted to +33.9%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 814%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Armenia.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Armenia amounted to +11.5% per year.

Imports in CIS

In 2021, chestnut imports in the CIS soared to X tons, picking up by 29% against the year before. Overall, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 77%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

In value terms, chestnut imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Azerbaijan (X tons) represented the key importer of chestnuts, mixing up 70% of total imports. Russia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Armenia (12%).

Azerbaijan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chestnuts imports, with a CAGR of +29.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Armenia (+24.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Russia (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Azerbaijan (+70 p.p.) and Armenia (+6.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -75.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chestnuts in the CIS, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Azerbaijan stood at +52.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (-5.7% per year) and Armenia (+27.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 7.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+17.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
