In 2022, the CIS chili and pepper market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of chili and pepper production was Kazakhstan (X tons), accounting for 62% of total volume. Moreover, chili and pepper production in Kazakhstan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Uzbekistan (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Azerbaijan (X tons), with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Kazakhstan totaled +4.6%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Uzbekistan (+1.7% per year) and Azerbaijan (+1.0% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of chilies and peppers (green) in the CIS fell to X tons per ha, almost unchanged from the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the chili and pepper yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Exports in CIS

In 2022, shipments abroad of chilies and peppers (green) increased by 16% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 105%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chili and pepper exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 127%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Uzbekistan (X tons), Armenia (X tons), Russia (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together recording 94% of total export. Kazakhstan (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Armenia (with a CAGR of +72.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chili and pepper supplying countries in the CIS were Armenia ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Belarus ($X), with a combined 83% share of total exports.

Armenia, with a CAGR of +81.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 8.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, overseas purchases of chilies and peppers (green) were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chili and pepper imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X tons) was the key importer of chilies and peppers (green), generating 54% of total imports. Belarus (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons). All these countries together took near 36% share of total imports. The following importers - Armenia (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) - together made up 8.3% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to chili and pepper imports into Russia stood at -1.5%. At the same time, Armenia (+55.1%), Belarus (+29.5%), Kyrgyzstan (+24.9%), Azerbaijan (+16.7%) and Kazakhstan (+15.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +55.1% from 2012-2022. Belarus (+20 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+8.9 p.p.), Armenia (+3.3 p.p.), Azerbaijan (+2.1 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -36.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chilies and peppers (green) in the CIS, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 10% share.

In Russia, chili and pepper imports declined by an average annual rate of -3.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+24.0% per year) and Kazakhstan (+16.1% per year).

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -9.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 8.6%.
