Common Clay Market Size in CIS

The CIS common clay market surged to $X in 2022, picking up by 15% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

The shipments of the one major exporters of common clay, namely Russia, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the common clay exports, with a CAGR of +32.6% from 2012 to 2022. Russia (+94 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) also remains the largest common clay supplier in the CIS.

Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Russia.

In 2022, the amount of common clay imported in the CIS skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 33% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports posted a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 99% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, common clay imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +121.3% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main importer of common clay, making up 70% of total imports. Russia (X tons) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (10%).

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the common clay imports, with a CAGR of +53.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Belarus (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kazakhstan increased by +67 percentage points.

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 56%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
