Exports in CIS

In 2022, exports of cloves in the CIS amounted to X tons, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, exports saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 107% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, clove exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 74%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The shipments of the one major exporters of cloves, namely Russia, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cloves exports, with a CAGR of +12.5% from 2012 to 2022. Russia (-1.9 p.p.) significantly weakened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) also remains the largest clove supplier in the CIS.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 23% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a deep downturn. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Russia.

In 2022, approx. X tons of cloves were imported in the CIS; rising by 29% against the year before. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 56%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, clove imports rose notably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 54%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X tons) was the largest importer of cloves, creating 60% of total imports. Azerbaijan (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (11%). Uzbekistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to clove imports into Russia stood at +1.2%. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+33.5%), Uzbekistan (+29.2%) and Kazakhstan (+8.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +33.5% from 2012-2022. Azerbaijan (+20 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+3.1 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -24.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cloves in the CIS, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 28% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 5.6% share.

In Russia, clove imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Azerbaijan (+59.4% per year) and Kazakhstan (-1.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -16.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+59.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
