The CIS coal other than lingite market contracted modestly to $X in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a slight reduction. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Production of Coal Other Than Lingite in CIS
In value terms, coal other than lingite production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a mild downturn. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, coal other than lingite exports in the CIS contracted to X tons, approximately equating the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -19.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 32%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, coal other than lingite exports shrank to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +24.7% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 49%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Russia prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 92% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), mixing up a 6.5% share of total exports.
Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the coal other than lingites exports, with a CAGR of +4.5% from 2012 to 2022. Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia increased by +2.2 percentage points.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest coal other than lingite supplier in the CIS, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 5.9% share of total exports.
In Russia, coal other than lingite exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -10.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (-0.4%).
Imports of Coal Other Than Lingite
Imports in CIS
For the third consecutive year, the CIS recorded growth in overseas purchases of coal other than lingites, which increased by 174% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports posted a significant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, coal other than lingite imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 65%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 81% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), constituting a 10% share of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to coal other than lingite imports into Russia stood at +29.7%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+35.4%), Belarus (+20.9%) and Kazakhstan (+9.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +35.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+40 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+3.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan saw its share reduced by -3.4% and -35.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coal other than lingites in the CIS, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia stood at -8.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+6.0% per year) and Kazakhstan (+11.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -66.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a precipitous contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 70%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+9.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
