In 2022, the amount of cocoa beans exported in the CIS dropped to X tons, shrinking by -3.1% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports saw a dramatic descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 5,675%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cocoa bean exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a dramatic setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 1,943% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belarus was the major exporter of cocoa beans in the CIS, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 74% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), creating a 22% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X kg) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Belarus was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cocoa beans exports, with a CAGR of +60.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Russia (-34.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Belarus (+74 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-77.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Belarus ($X), Russia ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Belarus, with a CAGR of +57.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -11.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 203% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, cocoa bean imports in the CIS amounted to X tons, surging by 5.6% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a mild increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, cocoa bean imports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Russia dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 79% of total imports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Belarus (X tons). All these countries together took near 19% share of total imports. Armenia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of cocoa beans. At the same time, Belarus (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +2.0% from 2012-2022. Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Armenia (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The shares of the largest importers remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cocoa beans in the CIS, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 9.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to +1.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (-0.1% per year) and Belarus (-0.5% per year).
