For the fourth consecutive year, the CIS coffee extract market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -0.3% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 9.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates increased by 29% to X tons, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 71%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, coffee extract exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 54%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Russia dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 89% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), comprising a 9.2% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +21.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+49.7%) and Kazakhstan (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +49.7% from 2012-2021. Belarus (+7.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -6.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest coffee extract supplier in the CIS, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 9.9% share of total exports.

In Russia, coffee extract exports expanded at an average annual rate of +13.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+38.5% per year) and Kazakhstan (-9.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, declining by -3.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-6.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, imports of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates in the CIS expanded significantly to X tons, growing by 9.2% against the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, coffee extract imports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) was the major importer of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates, creating 60% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (11%) and Uzbekistan (5.8%). The following importers - Azerbaijan (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) - together made up 5.1% of total imports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+25.6%), Belarus (+11.7%), Azerbaijan (+9.1%), Kazakhstan (+6.1%) and Moldova (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +25.6% from 2012-2021. Belarus (+6 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+5.8 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+3.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -17.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coffee extracts, essences and concentrates in the CIS, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled -1.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+7.5% per year) and Kazakhstan (+0.5% per year).

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 3.4%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
