The CIS composite paperboard market stood at $X in 2021, picking up by 9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. In 2021, shipments abroad of composite paper and paperboard increased by 2.7% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, composite paperboard exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 52%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), mixing up a 5.1% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to composite paperboard exports from Russia stood at -9.6%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+363.4%) and Kazakhstan (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +363.4% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +5.1 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest composite paperboard supplier in the CIS, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 4.6% share of total exports.

In Russia, composite paperboard exports shrank by an average annual rate of -8.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+323.1% per year) and Kazakhstan (+3.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 39% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Composite paperboard imports totaled X tons in 2021, with an increase of 12% compared with 2020. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, composite paperboard imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) represented the major importer of composite paper and paperboard, generating 68% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Belarus (X tons). All these countries together held near 17% share of total imports. Tajikistan (X tons), Armenia (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -10.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Armenia (+30.6%), Azerbaijan (+16.9%) and Belarus (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +30.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-3.7%), Kazakhstan (-4.7%) and Tajikistan (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Azerbaijan increased by +5, +2.8, +2.7 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported composite paper and paperboard in the CIS, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at -8.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+2.2% per year) and Belarus (+5.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 25% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
