Condom Market Size in CIS

In 2021, the CIS condom market increased by 2.5% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. In 2021, overseas shipments of condoms (sheath contraceptives) increased by 43% to X units, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, exports enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 480%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, condom exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 392%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Russia was the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which reached 62% of total exports. Belarus (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 28% share, followed by Armenia (7.3%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to condom exports from Russia stood at +9.7%. At the same time, Belarus (+60.1%) and Armenia (+30.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +60.1% from 2012-2021. While the share of Belarus (+27 p.p.) and Armenia (+5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-29.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Belarus ($X) and Armenia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 99% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Belarus, with a CAGR of +71.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per thousand units in 2021, which is down by -3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 68%. The level of export peaked at $X per thousand units in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per thousand units), while Armenia ($X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 57%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Russia dominates imports structure, recording X units, which was approx. 68% of total imports in 2021. Belarus (X units) took an 8.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (8.2%) and Uzbekistan (5.3%). Kyrgyzstan (X units), Armenia (X units) and Tajikistan (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of condoms (sheath contraceptives). At the same time, Belarus (+16.4%), Armenia (+13.1%), Tajikistan (+7.7%) and Uzbekistan (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +16.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-1.9%) and Kyrgyzstan (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belarus (+6.5 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+5.3 p.p.) and Armenia (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia saw its share reduced by -2.3%, -2.5% and -8.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported condoms (sheath contraceptives) in the CIS, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 4.1% share.

In Russia, condom imports increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+28.9% per year) and Kazakhstan (-0.7% per year).
