Cotton Lint Market Size in CIS

After three years of decline, the CIS cotton lint market increased by 5.2% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Cotton Lint Production in CIS

In value terms, cotton lint production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 12%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Uzbekistan (X tons) remains the largest cotton lint producing country in the CIS, accounting for 73% of total volume. Moreover, cotton lint production in Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tajikistan (X tons), sevenfold. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Uzbekistan stood at -2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tajikistan (-0.2% per year) and Kazakhstan (-3.4% per year).

The average cotton lint yield expanded rapidly to X tons per ha in 2022, surging by 6.5% against the previous year. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 11%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of cotton lint production in the CIS amounted to X ha, growing by 2.5% on 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cotton lint production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Cotton Lint Exports

Exports in CIS

For the third consecutive year, the CIS recorded decline in shipments abroad of cotton lint, which decreased by -39.1% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 186% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cotton lint exports declined markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 244%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Tajikistan (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) were the main exporters of cotton lint in 2022, amounting to near 44% and 33% of total exports, respectively. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Kyrgyzstan (6.3%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Azerbaijan (with a CAGR of +28.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest cotton lint supplying countries in the CIS were Azerbaijan ($X), Tajikistan ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X), with a combined 91% share of total exports.

Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +35.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 9.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in CIS

In 2022, imports of cotton lint in the CIS reached X tons, surging by 3.6% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cotton lint imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 23%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia was the major importer of cotton lint in the CIS, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 60% of total imports in 2022. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 25% share, followed by Belarus (14%).

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -12.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+1,161.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +1,161.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belarus (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +25 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Belarus ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 99% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +1,464.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
