Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate prominent growth. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Cow Peas Production in CIS

In value terms, cow peas production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +5.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Uzbekistan (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of cow peas production, accounting for 90% of total volume. Moreover, cow peas production in Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tajikistan (X tons), more than tenfold.

In Uzbekistan, cow peas production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Tajikistan (+1.8% per year) and Kazakhstan (-50.0% per year).

In 2021, overseas shipments of cow peas (dry) decreased by -63.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 712% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cow peas exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 736%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Tajikistan was the largest exporter of cow peas (dry) in the CIS, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 63% of total exports in 2021. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Uzbekistan (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 37% share of total exports.

Tajikistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of cow peas (dry). At the same time, Kazakhstan (+89.5%) and Uzbekistan (+17.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +89.5% from 2012-2021. Kyrgyzstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan increased by +63, +11 and +8.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Tajikistan ($X) emerged as the largest cow peas supplier in the CIS, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Tajikistan was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (+38.8% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-14.2% per year).

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of cow peas (dry) increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, cow peas imports shrank to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 117% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Azerbaijan prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 95% of total imports in 2021. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Azerbaijan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cow peas (dry) imports, with a CAGR of +81.5% from 2012 to 2021. Kyrgyzstan (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Azerbaijan increased by +94 percentage points.
