After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of crabs and crab meat decreased by -19.4% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports recorded a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 137% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, crab and crab meat imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 258%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Russia represented the largest importer of crabs and crab meat in the CIS, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 45% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons), together constituting a 47% share of total imports. Moldova (X kg) and Azerbaijan (X kg) took a minor share of total imports.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, crab and crab meat import price increased by +129.1% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 51%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+19.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
