Based on 2021 figures, currant and gooseberry harvested area increased by +46.6% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to currant and gooseberry production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in CIS

In 2021, approx. X tons of currants and gooseberries were exported in the CIS; increasing by 45% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 197%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, currant and gooseberry exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 216%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Belarus was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X tons), making up a 13% share of total exports. Russia (X tons), Moldova (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Belarus was also the fastest-growing in terms of the currants and gooseberries exports, with a CAGR of +55.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Russia (+45.4%), Kyrgyzstan (+42.4%), Azerbaijan (+29.3%) and Moldova (+24.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Belarus (+33 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Moldova (-7.5 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (-26.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest currant and gooseberry supplier in the CIS, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Belarus stood at +46.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Azerbaijan (+35.4% per year) and Moldova (+30.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 3.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

In 2021, purchases abroad of currants and gooseberries decreased by -9.2% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 89% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, currant and gooseberry imports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 94% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Kazakhstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) - each reached a 6% share of total imports.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the currants and gooseberries imports, with a CAGR of +13.0% from 2012 to 2021. Kazakhstan (-10.3%) and Belarus (-14.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+33 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-12.7 p.p.) and Belarus (-20.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported currants and gooseberries in the CIS, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 19% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to +3.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (-7.4% per year) and Kazakhstan (-3.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 43%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
