Industrial Diamond Market Size in CIS

In 2021, the CIS industrial diamond market decreased by -29.7% to $X, falling for the sixth consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a mild increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, industrial diamond production expanded rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 138%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the amount of diamonds (industrial) exported in the CIS skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 51% compared with 2020 figures. Total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +76.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, industrial diamond exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 47%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

The shipments of the one major exporters of diamonds (industrial), namely Russia, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the diamonds (industrial) exports, with a CAGR of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) also remains the largest industrial diamond supplier in the CIS.

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per kg in 2021, declining by -14.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 36%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per kg. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Russia.

In 2021, imports of diamonds (industrial) in the CIS surged to X tons, growing by 212% against 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, faced a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 29,917% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, industrial diamond imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, faced a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 386% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Armenia represented the main importer of diamonds (industrial) in the CIS, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 76% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons), together constituting a 24% share of total imports.

Armenia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the diamonds (industrial) imports, with a CAGR of +28.4% from 2012 to 2021. Azerbaijan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Russia (-28.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Armenia (+74 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+9.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -83.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Armenia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported diamonds (industrial) in the CIS, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 26% share of total imports.

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per kg, dropping by -36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 3,713% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per kg in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per kg), while Armenia ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
