The CIS diesel-electric and other locomotive market surged to $X in 2022, rising by 73% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, diesel-electric and other locomotive production expanded modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 25%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, diesel-electric and other locomotive exports in the CIS shrank sharply to X units, declining by -25.2% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 919% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, diesel-electric and other locomotive exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 189% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

Russia represented the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which accounted for 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X units), Armenia (X units) and Kyrgyzstan (X units), together comprising a 23% share of total exports. The following exporters - Kazakhstan (X units) and Belarus (X units) - together made up 6.7% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to diesel-electric and other locomotive exports from Russia stood at -5.6%. At the same time, Armenia (+11.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +11.6% from 2012-2022. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-1.8%), Kyrgyzstan (-9.9%) and Azerbaijan (-57.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Azerbaijan (+10 p.p.) and Armenia (+6.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-2.8 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (-3.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest diesel-electric and other locomotive supplier in the CIS, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 0.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Armenia, with a 0.4% share.

In Russia, diesel-electric and other locomotive exports increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Azerbaijan (-61.4% per year) and Armenia (+8.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per unit in 2022, jumping by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 514% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per unit), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+11.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Diesel-Electric and Other Locomotives

Imports in CIS

Diesel-electric and other locomotive imports surged to X units in 2022, picking up by 298% compared with the year before. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild decrease. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, diesel-electric and other locomotive imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 161%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the key importer of diesel-electric and other locomotives in the CIS, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was approx. 73% of total imports in 2022. Russia (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Azerbaijan (X units). All these countries together held approx. 22% share of total imports. Uzbekistan (X units) and Kyrgyzstan (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +11.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+27.1%) and Azerbaijan (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +27.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-13.8%) and Russia (-14.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kazakhstan (+50 p.p.), Azerbaijan (+4.6 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-5.2 p.p.) and Russia (-47.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported diesel-electric and other locomotives in the CIS, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by Russia, with a 14% share.

In Kazakhstan, diesel-electric and other locomotive imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+176.3% per year) and Russia (-29.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -67.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 318%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per unit), while Azerbaijan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
