Market Size for Duck and Goose Meat in CIS

After two years of decline, the CIS duck and goose meat market increased by 25% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Production of Duck and Goose Meat in CIS

In value terms, duck and goose meat production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 75% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Belarus (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of duck and goose meat production, accounting for 80% of total volume. Moreover, duck and goose meat production in Belarus exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Kazakhstan (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Belarus totaled +6.2%.

In 2022, the average duck and goose meat yield in the CIS rose sharply to X kg per head, picking up by 5.4% compared with the previous year. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the yield increased by 31%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per head. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the duck and goose meat yield remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The global number of animals slaughtered for duck and goose meat production dropped to X heads in 2022, leveling off at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 51%. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In 2022, the amount of duck and goose meat exported in the CIS declined rapidly to X tons, dropping by -28.6% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 41%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, duck and goose meat exports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +124.5% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 54%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

Belarus was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), making up an 18% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Belarus increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+30.9%) and Kazakhstan (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +30.9% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia increased by +16 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest duck and goose meat supplier in the CIS, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.

In Belarus, duck and goose meat exports increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+18.3% per year) and Kazakhstan (+10.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 38% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

In 2022, purchases abroad of duck and goose meat was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 192% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, duck and goose meat imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 99%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of duck and goose meat imports in 2022 were Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons), together recording 87% of total import. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), comprising a 9.9% share of total imports. Moldova (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Moldova (with a CAGR of +78.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest duck and goose meat importing markets in the CIS were Russia ($X), Tajikistan ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X), with a combined 78% share of total imports. Kyrgyzstan and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

Moldova, with a CAGR of +113.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -5.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 109%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+19.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
