Russia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of durum wheat production, comprising approx. 76% of total volume. Moreover, durum wheat production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Kazakhstan (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Uzbekistan (X tons), with a 5.7% share.
In Russia, durum wheat production increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+2.9% per year) and Uzbekistan (-0.8% per year).
The average durum wheat yield expanded significantly to X tons per ha in 2022, surging by 5.6% on the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the durum wheat yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of durum wheat were harvested in the CIS; remaining stable against 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 7.3%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of durum wheat increased by 43% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 98%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, durum wheat exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 70%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Kazakhstan (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) represented roughly 97% of total exports in 2022. Moldova (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +45.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Russia ($X) and Belarus ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 97% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Belarus, with a CAGR of +35.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -18.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, purchases abroad of durum wheat decreased by -12.4% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 148%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, durum wheat imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 120% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 61% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), comprising a 29% share of total imports. The following importers - Belarus (X tons), Tajikistan (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) - each resulted at an 8% share of total imports.
Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Moldova (+89.1%) and Kazakhstan (+56.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +89.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-1.7%), Belarus (-11.7%) and Tajikistan (-11.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+48 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+29 p.p.) and Moldova (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported durum wheat in the CIS, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Tajikistan, with a 2.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled +6.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+48.2% per year) and Tajikistan (-7.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
