In 2021, shipments abroad of electronic chips was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, electronic chip exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X units) represented the main exporter of electronic chips, comprising 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X units) and Uzbekistan (X units), together generating a 26% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to electronic chip exports from Russia stood at +12.7%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+110.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +110.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Belarus (-1.8%) and Kazakhstan (-13.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+28 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+5.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-10.8 p.p.) and Belarus (-22.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Belarus ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 98% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Uzbekistan, which accounted for a further 0.6%.

Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +48.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -3.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 14%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per unit), while Uzbekistan (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of electronic chips decreased by -17.4% to X units, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 83%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, electronic chip imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Russia prevails in imports structure, amounting to X units, which was approx. 79% of total imports in 2021. Belarus (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 9.8% share, followed by Kazakhstan (5.4%). Uzbekistan (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -4.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +2.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-9.1%) and Uzbekistan (-34.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belarus and Uzbekistan increased by +4 and +3.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported electronic chips in the CIS, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 3.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 1.7% share.

In Russia, electronic chip imports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+7.8% per year) and Kazakhstan (-6.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per unit), while Kazakhstan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
