The CIS ethylene market fell to $X in 2021, which is down by -7.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 302%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

In value terms, ethylene exports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 110% against the previous year. Belarus dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 98% of total exports in 2021. Russia (X kg) held a minor share of total exports.

Belarus was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ethylene exports, with a CAGR of -5.5% from 2012 to 2021. Russia (-40.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Belarus (+55 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-54.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest ethylene supplier in the CIS, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports.

In Belarus, ethylene exports shrank by an average annual rate of -4.7% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 207% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted strong growth. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+52.9%).

Ethylene Imports

Imports in CIS

After six years of growth, supplies from abroad of ethylene decreased by -80.8% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 161%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, ethylene imports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 236% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 94% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X tons), committing a 5.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to ethylene imports into Russia stood at +10.3%. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+18.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +18.8% from 2012-2021. Azerbaijan (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -2.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ethylene in the CIS, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 5.5% share of total imports.

In Russia, ethylene imports increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% over the period from 2012-2021.

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 126% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a slight reduction. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan totaled $X per ton.
