Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 28%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, expanded clays exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 49%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) represented the key exporters of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag in the CIS, together generating 77% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), comprising a 21% share of total exports. Moldova (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, expanded clays export price increased by +63.0% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a perceptible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 78%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, expanded clays imports dropped slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 75%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Russia was the key importer of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag in the CIS, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 73% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), committing a 20% share of total imports. Belarus (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to expanded clays imports into Russia stood at +7.3%. At the same time, Belarus (+39.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +39.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+15 p.p.) and Belarus (+4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -17.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag in the CIS, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 12% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled +8.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (-5.5% per year) and Belarus (+27.1% per year).
