For the fourth consecutive year, the CIS recorded growth in shipments abroad of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs, which increased by 12% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +29.1% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +24.9% against 2016 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Russia (X tons) represented the largest exporter of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs in the CIS, making up 99% of total export.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs exports, with a CAGR of +8.6% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) also remains the largest seafood meals and pellets supplier in the CIS.

Imports in CIS

In 2021, approx. X tons of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs were imported in the CIS; waning by -16% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports saw a sharp downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 28%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Armenia represented the largest importer of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs in the CIS, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 44% of total imports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Russia (11%), Kazakhstan (7.4%), Moldova (6.3%) and Uzbekistan (5.7%). Azerbaijan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to seafood meals and pellets imports into Armenia stood at +10.5%. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+17.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +17.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-7.0%), Moldova (-12.2%), Uzbekistan (-13.6%), Belarus (-18.0%) and Russia (-35.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Armenia (+42 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+5.5 p.p.), Belarus (+4.7 p.p.), Moldova (+3.6 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+2.9 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-61.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Armenia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs in the CIS, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Russia, with a 13% share.

In Armenia, seafood meals and pellets imports increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (-20.3% per year) and Russia (-34.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 6.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 12%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
