In 2022, after seven years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of folding cartons, boxes and cases of non-corrugated paper or paperboard, when their volume decreased by -4.1% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

In value terms, non-corrugated paper box exports shrank to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +84.8% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Russia prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 85% of total exports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 7.6% share, followed by Belarus (4.6%). Uzbekistan (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +13.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+42.5%) and Kazakhstan (+16.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +42.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belarus (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+35 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+4.1 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belarus saw its share reduced by -10.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest non-corrugated paper box supplier in the CIS, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 9% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 4.1% share.

In Russia, non-corrugated paper box exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+22.4% per year) and Belarus (-3.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of folding cartons, boxes and cases of non-corrugated paper or paperboard was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-corrugated paper box imports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 8.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 43% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons), together constituting a 52% share of total imports. Armenia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-corrugated paper box imports into Russia stood at -9.2%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+53.6%), Kyrgyzstan (+17.9%), Azerbaijan (+17.6%), Armenia (+12.0%) and Kazakhstan (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +53.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belarus (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Azerbaijan (+8.2 p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (+7.7 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+7.7 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+6.8 p.p.) and Armenia (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-34.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported folding cartons, boxes and cases of non-corrugated paper or paperboard in the CIS, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Azerbaijan ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 16% share.

In Russia, non-corrugated paper box imports declined by an average annual rate of -7.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Azerbaijan (+31.6% per year) and Kazakhstan (-0.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
