The CIS baby food market dropped to $X in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a noticeable setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of food preparations for infants increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, baby food exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +80.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Russia prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), constituting a 9% share of total exports.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the food preparations for infants exports, with a CAGR of +12.6% from 2012 to 2021. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Russia (+23 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belarus saw its share reduced by -9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest baby food supplier in the CIS, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 6% share of total exports.

For the third year in a row, the CIS recorded decline in overseas purchases of food preparations for infants, which decreased by -8.4% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 9% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, baby food imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia was the major importer of food preparations for infants in the CIS, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 55% of total imports in 2021. Kazakhstan (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Uzbekistan (12%) and Azerbaijan (4.6%). The following importers - Tajikistan (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) - together made up 7.5% of total imports.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -5.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+20.8%), Belarus (+5.4%), Kazakhstan (+2.8%) and Moldova (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +20.8% from 2012-2021. Azerbaijan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tajikistan (-1.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+12 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+6.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -18.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported food preparations for infants in the CIS, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 15% share.

In Russia, baby food imports contracted by an average annual rate of -5.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+1.5% per year) and Uzbekistan (+22.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Moldova ($X per ton) and Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) and Kazakhstan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tajikistan (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
