Leather Footwear Market Size in CIS

The CIS leather footwear market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Leather Footwear Production in CIS

In value terms, leather footwear production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in CIS

In 2021, leather footwear exports in the CIS rose remarkably to X tons, surging by 13% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 57%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, leather footwear exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X tons) and Russia (X tons) dominates exports structure, together committing 93% of total exports. The following exporters - Moldova (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) - each recorded a 3.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +80.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Belarus ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 96% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +98.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per kg, increasing by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per kg in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per kg), while Belarus ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+10.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Leather Footwear Imports

In 2021, overseas purchases of leather footwear increased by 24% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leather footwear imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 31%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) represented the key importer of leather footwear, constituting 71% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (6.9%). The following importers - Azerbaijan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) - each recorded a 3.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to leather footwear imports into Russia stood at -7.3%. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+16.1%), Belarus (+10.0%), Kazakhstan (+6.6%) and Kyrgyzstan (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +16.1% from 2012-2021. While the share of Kazakhstan (+10 p.p.), Belarus (+5.2 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-13 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported leather footwear in the CIS, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to -3.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+11.9% per year) and Belarus (+5.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per kg in 2021, rising by 4.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per kg), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
