Frozen fish fillet exports shrank to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -13% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 59%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen fish fillet exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 68% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Russia dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 84% of total exports in 2022. Tajikistan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Kazakhstan (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 15% share of total exports.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +10.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tajikistan (+30.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +30.1% from 2012-2022. Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Russia (+6.2 p.p.) and Tajikistan (+6.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-12.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest frozen fish fillet supplier in the CIS, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 9.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled +12.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (-2.6% per year) and Tajikistan (+38.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tajikistan (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

Frozen fish fillet imports contracted notably to X tons in 2022, waning by -38.6% against the year before. Overall, imports saw a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen fish fillet imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Russia represented the major importer of frozen fish fillet in the CIS, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 70% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), mixing up a 20% share of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia stood at -1.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (-11.2% per year) and Kazakhstan (+2.8% per year).

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 15% against the previous year. Import price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, frozen fish fillet import price increased by +36.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
