Frozen Pork Cut Market Size in CIS

In 2022, the CIS frozen pork cut market decreased by -16.7% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen pork cut production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 1,396% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Russia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of frozen pork cut production, comprising approx. 95% of total volume. Moreover, frozen pork cut production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tajikistan (X tons), more than tenfold.

In Russia, frozen pork cut production increased at an average annual rate of +15.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Tajikistan (+2.2% per year) and Armenia (+11.0% per year).

For the fourth consecutive year, the CIS recorded growth in overseas shipments of frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat, which increased by 11% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 877%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, frozen pork cut exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 612% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Russia (X tons), together finishing at 98% of total export.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat exports, with a CAGR of +63.9% from 2012 to 2022. Russia (+58 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) also remains the largest frozen pork cut supplier in the CIS.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to +52.4%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -19.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Russia.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Russia amounted to -7.0% per year.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat increased by 18% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen pork cut imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a precipitous decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 57%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Armenia was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 49% of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Kazakhstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons). All these countries together took near 50% share of total imports.

Armenia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat imports, with a CAGR of +16.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+10.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-8.1%) and Belarus (-15.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Armenia (+48 p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (+22 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+17 p.p.) and Belarus (+6.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest frozen pork cut importing markets in the CIS were Armenia ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a combined 90% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Armenia, with a CAGR of +11.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 4.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+6.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
