The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen whole fish imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 37%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Russia (X tons) was the key importer of frozen whole fish, comprising 63% of total imports. Belarus (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons). All these countries together took near 29% share of total imports. Moldova (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -3.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+1.9%), Kazakhstan (+1.8%) and Moldova (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +1.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Azerbaijan (-1.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belarus (+5.9 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -10.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported frozen whole fish in the CIS, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with an 8.7% share.

In Russia, frozen whole fish imports increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+1.5% per year) and Kazakhstan (+11.6% per year).
