In 2021, purchases abroad of fructose and fructose syrup was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fructose imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the major importer of fructose and fructose syrup in the CIS, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 80% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), mixing up a 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Kazakhstan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) - together made up 4.8% of total imports.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -5.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+24.3%) and Belarus (+10.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +24.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belarus (+9.1 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -13.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fructose and fructose syrup in the CIS, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 2.4% share.

In Russia, fructose imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+6.1% per year) and Kazakhstan (-3.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 23% against the previous year. Import price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, fructose import price increased by +59.9% against 2017 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Russia ($X per ton) and Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) and Kazakhstan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+11.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
