Garlic Market Size in CIS

The CIS garlic market expanded remarkably to $X in 2022, surging by 7.1% against the previous year. From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Tajikistan (with a CAGR of +24.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average garlic yield in the CIS was estimated at X tons per ha, leveling off at the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the garlic yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the garlic harvested area in the CIS expanded to X ha, picking up by 3.8% against the year before. Overall, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 7.4%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the garlic harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of garlic increased by 0.4% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 288% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 231%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan represented the largest exporter of garlic in the CIS, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 53% of total exports in 2022. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Russia (16%). Azerbaijan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Uzbekistan decreased at an average annual rate of -3.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+36.6%) and Russia (+35.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +36.6% from 2012-2022. Kyrgyzstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan, Russia and Azerbaijan increased by +53, +14 and +3.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest garlic supplier in the CIS, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with an 11% share.

In Uzbekistan, garlic exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+29.3% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-10.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 32%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, the amount of garlic imported in the CIS soared to X tons, picking up by 20% compared with the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, garlic imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 61% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 83% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), generating a 7.2% share of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to garlic imports into Russia stood at +3.3%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+98.3%) and Belarus (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +98.3% from 2012-2022. Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +3.7 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported garlic in the CIS, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 2.6% share.

In Russia, garlic imports increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+0.8% per year) and Belarus (+7.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -1.7% against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, garlic import price increased by +20.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 51%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
