The CIS gin and geneva market contracted to $X in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X litres, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, gin and geneva exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X litres) represented the major exporter of gin and geneva, mixing up 84% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X litres), making up an 11% share of total exports. The following exporters - Armenia (X litres) and Moldova (X litres) - together made up 5.6% of total exports.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the gin and geneva exports, with a CAGR of +42.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belarus (+30.6%) and Armenia (+16.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moldova experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Russia (+6.5 p.p.), Armenia (+3.9 p.p.) and Moldova (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Belarus (-12.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest gin and geneva supplier in the CIS, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 6.5% share.

In Russia, gin and geneva exports expanded at an average annual rate of +27.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+18.1% per year) and Moldova (-2.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per litre, rising by 3.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per litre), while Armenia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (-1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

After six years of growth, overseas purchases of gin and geneva decreased by -5.8% to X litres in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 97% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X litres in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, gin and geneva imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 49%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia dominates imports structure, recording X litres, which was near 87% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Belarus (X litres), Kazakhstan (X litres), Armenia (X litres) and Moldova (X litres) - together made up 10% of total imports.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +10.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Armenia (+25.2%), Belarus (+15.1%), Kazakhstan (+8.4%) and Moldova (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +25.2% from 2012-2022. While the share of Russia (-3.1 p.p.) decreased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gin and geneva in the CIS, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 7.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Armenia, with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia stood at +4.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+17.0% per year) and Armenia (+34.0% per year).

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per litre, falling by -4.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per litre), while Russia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
