Ginger Market Size in CIS

The CIS ginger market soared to $X in 2022, jumping by 18% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -7.0% against 2020 indices. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of ginger production, accounting for 99% of total volume.

In 2022, approx. X tons of ginger were exported in the CIS; surging by 37% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 633% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ginger exports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 211% against the previous year. Belarus dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), committing a 9% share of total exports.

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -30.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a dramatic contraction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus totaled $X per ton.

Imports in CIS

Ginger imports surged to X tons in 2022, increasing by 17% compared with the year before. Overall, imports recorded strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, ginger imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -10.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 72%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Russia was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 75% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), generating a 14% share of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to ginger imports into Russia stood at +10.1%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+113.8%), Azerbaijan (+79.6%), Kazakhstan (+44.7%) and Belarus (+31.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +113.8% from 2012-2022. Belarus (+11 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+3.9 p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (+2.1 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -21.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ginger in the CIS, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 5.1% share.

In Russia, ginger imports increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+27.7% per year) and Kazakhstan (+37.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 11%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
