The CIS flat glass market reduced slightly to $X in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Russia (X tons) was the key exporter of flat glass, generating 56% of total exports. Belarus (X tons) took a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kyrgyzstan (17%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to flat glass exports from Russia stood at +13.9%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+20.8%) and Belarus (+8.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, Russia ($X), Kyrgyzstan ($X) and Belarus ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 97% of total exports.

Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of +31.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 79% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+8.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of flat glass increased by 44% to X tons, rising for the sixth year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the key importer of flat glass in the CIS, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 53% of total imports in 2021. Russia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Azerbaijan (7.6%), Uzbekistan (6.5%), Belarus (5.2%) and Armenia (4.5%). Moldova (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +15.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+35.7%), Azerbaijan (+17.8%), Armenia (+8.7%) and Moldova (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +35.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Belarus (-1.6%) and Russia (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kazakhstan (+29 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+5.9 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+4.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Belarus (-4.5 p.p.) and Russia (-33.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported flat glass in the CIS, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with an 8.2% share.

In Kazakhstan, flat glass imports increased at an average annual rate of +14.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (-8.1% per year) and Uzbekistan (+38.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern.
