In 2022, shipments abroad of granite (crude) increased by 30% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 126%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, crude granite exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed strong growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan was the main exporter of granite (crude) in the CIS, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 66% of total exports in 2022. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Russia (7.3%) and Uzbekistan (6.9%).

Exports from Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+60.9%), Uzbekistan (+24.8%) and Russia (+16.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +60.9% from 2012-2022. Kyrgyzstan (+18 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+5.3 p.p.) and Russia (+4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -27.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X) emerged as the largest crude granite supplier in the CIS, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kyrgyzstan stood at +90.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (-2.1% per year) and Uzbekistan (+36.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 116% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a measured increase. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+18.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Crude granite imports shrank rapidly to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -69.7% on the year before. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a measured increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 992%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, crude granite imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 440% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) were the main importers of granite (crude) in 2022, amounting to near 36% and 29% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together achieving a 25% share of total imports. Armenia (X tons), Tajikistan (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tajikistan (with a CAGR of +214.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest crude granite importing markets in the CIS were Uzbekistan ($X), Russia ($X) and Belarus ($X), with a combined 81% share of total imports. Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

Tajikistan, with a CAGR of +82.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 106% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
