Grape Market Size in CIS

The CIS grape market dropped to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -5.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Grape Production in CIS

In value terms, grape production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a slight shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Uzbekistan (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of grape production, accounting for 44% of total volume. Moreover, grape production in Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Russia (X tons), twofold. Moldova (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Uzbekistan totaled +3.2%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Russia (+10.4% per year) and Moldova (-0.1% per year).

The average grape yield contracted to X tons per ha in 2022, almost unchanged from 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 12%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The grape harvested area dropped modestly to X ha in 2022, with a decrease of -1.7% against 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 8.3%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the grape harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in CIS

In 2022, shipments abroad of grapes increased by 32% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 142% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, grape exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 222%. Exports by Country

Uzbekistan represented the largest exporter of grapes in the CIS, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 67% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Moldova (X tons), generating a 19% share of total exports. Tajikistan (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Armenia (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to grape exports from Uzbekistan stood at +10.0%. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+44.9%), Tajikistan (+24.2%), Kyrgyzstan (+23.6%) and Moldova (+7.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +44.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Armenia (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+67 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Armenia (-19.3 p.p.) and Moldova (-46 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest grape supplier in the CIS, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Moldova ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with a 3.5% share.

In Uzbekistan, grape exports increased at an average annual rate of +14.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Moldova (+11.4% per year) and Azerbaijan (+43.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -4% against the previous year. Export price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Armenia (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the fourth consecutive year, the CIS recorded growth in supplies from abroad of grapes, which increased by 4% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +20.0% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 56%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Russia represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 67% of total imports. Belarus (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Kazakhstan (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 29% share of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of grapes. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+53.7%), Kazakhstan (+31.1%) and Belarus (+16.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +53.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of Belarus (+12 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+11 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-26 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported grapes in the CIS, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 9.2% share.

In Russia, grape imports decreased by an average annual rate of -2.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+15.6% per year) and Kazakhstan (+28.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -1.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 1.2%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
