Graphic Papers Market Size in CIS

The CIS graphic papers market fell slightly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -2.8% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, graphic papers production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 35%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of graphic papers increased by 8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 19%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, graphic papers exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 16%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2022. Belarus (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of graphic papers. At the same time, Belarus (+5.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +5.6% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia decreased by -1.6 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest graphic papers supplier in the CIS, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 3.6% share of total exports.

In Russia, graphic papers exports contracted by an average annual rate of -3.8% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -7.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Russia stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+0.5%).

Imports in CIS

In 2022, purchases abroad of graphic papers increased by 0.5% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, graphic papers imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 48% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (14%), Belarus (11%) and Azerbaijan (4.9%). The following importers - Moldova (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) - each recorded a 4.1% share of total imports.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -7.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+229.9%), Tajikistan (+8.0%) and Azerbaijan (+5.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +229.9% from 2012-2022. Moldova and Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-3.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+15 p.p.), Belarus (+3.1 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-23.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported graphic papers in the CIS, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 14% share.

In Russia, graphic papers imports declined by an average annual rate of -7.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+194.7% per year) and Kazakhstan (-2.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 7.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 8.6%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
