In 2021, the amount of graphite (natural) exported in the CIS reduced markedly to X tons, waning by -19.8% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 282%. In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 7.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Russia amounted to $X per ton.

Graphite imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, picking up by 41% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 293%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. Imports by Country

Russia was the major importer of graphite (natural) in the CIS, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 64% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tajikistan (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons), together generating a 27% share of total imports. The following importers - Belarus (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) - together made up 6.7% of total imports.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -11.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tajikistan (+39.2%) and Kazakhstan (+16.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +39.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-5.1%) and Belarus (-29.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tajikistan (+14 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+12 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Belarus (-26.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported graphite (natural) in the CIS, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 7% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 3.2% share.

In Russia, graphite imports plunged by an average annual rate of -6.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+10.8% per year) and Belarus (-25.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, declining by -10.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a tangible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 104% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
